Well Water Hardness: Average Levels, Testing & When to Soften

Hardness is the most common complaint from private well owners and the least dangerous. It is dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up as groundwater moves through carbonate rock. This guide explains the scale labs use, where hard groundwater is typical, how to read your test, and how to size a softener if you want one.

How hard is well water, and does it matter?

USGS calls water hard above 120 mg/L of calcium carbonate (about 7 grains per gallon) and very hard above 180 mg/L (10.5 grains). Wells in limestone and dolomite country routinely test in the very hard range; wells in granite or sandstone are often soft. Hardness is not a health issue and the EPA sets no limit for it, but above about 7 grains it scales water heaters, spots dishes and wastes soap, which is where a softener starts to pay for itself.

The hardness scale

Labs report hardness as milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate (mg/L as CaCO3), sometimes written as parts per million. Softener manufacturers use grains per gallon (gpg). The USGS Water Science School classification is the one most state labs follow.

Where hard well water is common

Hardness follows geology. Groundwater that has moved through limestone, dolomite or gypsum dissolves calcium and magnesium along the way; water in granite, basalt or clean sandstone picks up much less. USGS national mapping shows the softest groundwater in parts of New England, the Southeast coastal plain and the Pacific Northwest, and hard to very hard groundwater across much of Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Arizona, Utah and southern California, with the Upper Midwest and Florida also commonly hard. Two wells a mile apart can differ if they tap different formations at different depths, so a regional map is a hint, not a result.

How to test hardness

  • Certified lab. Hardness is included in nearly every basic well panel alongside iron, manganese, pH, nitrate and coliform bacteria. It is the most useful option because you get everything a softener decision depends on in one report. See how to test your well.
  • Titration drop kit. Accurate to about a grain per gallon; the same method softener installers use.
  • Test strips. Fine for a yes-or-no answer; too coarse for sizing equipment.

Whatever method you use, also test pH. Soft, low-pH well water is corrosive and can leach lead and copper from plumbing, which matters far more for health than hardness itself. Our lead guide explains the connection.

Do you need a softener?

Below about 7 gpg most households live with hardness. Above it, the case for a softener is practical: less scale in the water heater, longer appliance life, less detergent, no film on shower doors. An ion-exchange softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium (or potassium, if you use potassium chloride salt). The sodium added is modest at typical hardness, but people on sodium-restricted diets often add reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap or bypass the softener for one cold-water line.

Sizing the unit

Daily grains to remove = hardness in gpg × gallons used per day. USGS estimates the average American uses roughly 80 to 100 gallons per day at home. A family of four at 15 gpg therefore removes about 15 × 360 = 5,400 grains a day; a 32,000-grain softener regenerating every 5 to 6 days is a typical fit. Softening improves how water feels and how long your appliances last; it does nothing for arsenic, nitrate, bacteria or PFAS. Treat those decisions separately, based on your lab results. What is a normal hardness level for well water?

There is no single normal. USGS classifies water at 0 to 60 mg/L of calcium carbonate as soft, 61 to 120 mg/L as moderately hard, 121 to 180 mg/L as hard, and above 180 mg/L as very hard. Wells drilled into limestone, dolomite or gypsum aquifers, which is much of the Midwest, Texas, Florida and the Southwest, are commonly hard to very hard. Wells in granite or sandstone regions such as New England and the Pacific Northwest are often soft.

Is hard well water bad for you?

No. Hardness is calcium and magnesium, both of which people need, and the EPA does not regulate it. It is an aesthetic and plumbing problem: scale in water heaters and fixtures, soap that does not lather, spotted dishes, and dry skin. The one indirect concern is that hard water often comes with iron and manganese, which are worth testing separately.

How do I convert mg/L to grains per gallon?

Divide by 17.1. A lab report of 256 mg/L as CaCO3 is about 15 grains per gallon, which is the unit softener manufacturers use for sizing. Softener capacity is rated in total grains removed between regenerations.

Do I need a softener if my well water is hard?

Water above roughly 7 grains per gallon (120 mg/L) usually produces enough scale and soap problems that owners find a softener worthwhile; below that it is a preference. If you also have dissolved iron under about 3 mg/L, a softener can handle both. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is a separate step for drinking water and does not soften the whole house.
